January 17 DCCC Presents Old Crown Brass Band at 7:30pm, Historic Valentine Theater,
Defiance. The Old Crown Brass Band, founded in 2007, is a traditional
British-style ensemble make up of brass and percussionists from northeastern
Indiana and northwestern Ohio. The unique sound of this brass band stems from
the use of instruments not typically found in the American concert band such as
E-flat soprano and B-flat cornets, flugelhorns, tenor horns, baritone horns,
euphoniums and bass and contrabass tubas. (Defiance)

Duo, comprised of Nancy Lendrim and Jody Guinn, returns to Defiance after an
exciting 2011 recital. The two began playing together to promote the music of
Carlos Salzedo, along the way uncovering a number of his unpublished duo harp
works. They have performed at conferences of the American Harp Society and the
World Harp Congress and have given concerts and master classes throughout the
United States. Lendrim is Principal Harpist with the Toledo Symphony, and Guinn

Lilac Festival ~ For
those who were not aware of why we do the Lilac Festival, here is a bit of
history. In the 1920’s Mayor Ed Bronson, also president of the Defiance Garden
Club, declared the Lilac as the city flower. He encouraged the Defiance
community to plant lilacs as a celebration. On April 21st, 1937, Mayor Joe C.
Krutsch made a City resolution declaring the Lilac as the official flower of
the City of Defiance. The Festival will be kicked off at 10:00am with the power
of purple parade sponsored by the American Cancer Society. After the parade,
enjoy a great day of events with over 60 fine arts, crafts and food vendors. As
in years past, Live
Entertainment, children will also have activities throughout the day. Local

planning committee members, county resident Randy Ball, who died of cancer in
