January 2013

 January 17 DCCC Presents Old Crown Brass Band at 7:30pm, Historic Valentine Theater, Defiance. The Old Crown Brass Band, founded in 2007, is a traditional British-style ensemble make up of brass and percussionists from northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio. The unique sound of this brass band stems from the use of instruments not typically found in the American concert band such as E-flat soprano and B-flat cornets, flugelhorns, tenor horns, baritone horns, euphoniums and bass and contrabass tubas.  January 24 Martin Luther King Celebration, 7:30pm  Defiance College presents Guest Speaker Dr. Dean Johnson - "Living King's Legacy of Nonviolent Revolution: Resisting Racism & Militarism in 21st Century America" Presentation is free and open to the public. January 26   Wayne Trace Community Talent Show at 7 p.m. at Payne Elementary auditorium with tickets sold at the door(Paulding)

January 27 Du & Sim Piano Duo presented at The Stroede Center for the Arts at 7pm. Defiance audiences who have previously enjoyed duo pianists will welcome Ning-Wu Du and Helen Sim as they perform a varied repertoire in an exciting style. One reviewer called them “a thrilling duo in glorious form.” This married couple met at Julliard and have since traveled extensively, exhibiting their unique blend of dexterity and artistry. Du and Sim have won many musical honors and awards and have been exuberantly praised by critics. It has been said that they “bring a slick and suave finesse to their music-making, proffering a vibrant patina of sound and sure-fisted rhythmic variety.” (Defiance)

February 14   DCCC Presents Big Band Sound of the DCCB at 7:30pm, Historic Valentine Theater, Defiance. Always a favorite with Defiance audiences, the Big Band Sound of the DCCB continues to delight audiences. Organized as part of the Defiance College Community Band, the ensemble is comprised of area musicians who share a love of big band music. Join director Scott Rogers and the band for an evening of big band classics featuring the music of Ellington, Basie and Miller. (Defiance)

February 17     DCCC presents Salzedo Harp Duo at 7:00pm at the Stroede Center for the Arts.The Salzedo Harp Duo, comprised of Nancy Lendrim and Jody Guinn, returns to Defiance after an exciting 2011 recital. The two began playing together to promote the music of Carlos Salzedo, along the way uncovering a number of his unpublished duo harp works. They have performed at conferences of the American Harp Society and the World Harp Congress and have given concerts and master classes throughout the United States. Lendrim is Principal Harpist with the Toledo Symphony, and Guinn holds the same position with the Akron Symphony. (Defiance)

February 21    Empty Bowls Dinner DC's Social Work Organization will hold its 13th Annual Empty Bowls Dinner on Thursday, February 21st from 4:30-7:00pm. Located at the K of C Hall, 111 Elliott Road, Defiance. Tickets are $11 and include a hand-thrown bowl, soup, and bread. The bowl is yours to keep. Meal-only tickets are $8.  March 21  DCCC Presents Good Lovelies, Historic Valentine Theater at 7:30pm, Defiance Funny and upbeat, with just a touch of sass, the Good Lovelies’ three-part harmonies, constant instrument swapping and witty on-stage banter have enlivened the folk music landscape since Caroline Brooks, Kerri Ough and Sue Passmore joined forces in 2006 for their first show at Toronto’s funky Gladstone Hotel. Russian Duo offers a pleasing mosaic of traditional and classic sounds drawn from Russian folk music, romances, dances, classical music, gypsy melodies and Russian songs. Oleg Kruglyakov, balalaika, and Terry Boyarsky, piano, add vocals and Russian percussion to their unique blend of instruments. Audiences should expect an exuberant performance of soulful, passionate music which will delight the ear.

May 11     2013 Lilac Festival ~ For those who were not aware of why we do the Lilac Festival, here is a bit of history. In the 1920’s Mayor Ed Bronson, also president of the Defiance Garden Club, declared the Lilac as the city flower. He encouraged the Defiance community to plant lilacs as a celebration. On April 21st, 1937, Mayor Joe C. Krutsch made a City resolution declaring the Lilac as the official flower of the City of Defiance. The Festival will be kicked off at 10:00am with the power of purple parade sponsored by the American Cancer Society. After the parade, enjoy a great day of events with over 60 fine arts, crafts and food vendors. As in years past, Live Entertainment, children will also have activities throughout the day.
